“Art is always a nice hobby to have, but you’ll have to have a real job, too”.

                                                                                                            -My Mother

Well, at least that’s what my dear parents said when I announce at the ripe old age of six that I was going to be an artist.  Oh, yes, they knew I had the talent and the desire, but their own experiences of the Great Depression left them full of fears about housing and feeding a family.  Somehow, being a professional artist was something that fell into the realm of the “unknown” and, therefore, “too risky”.  Well, bless their misguided good intentions!  What they didn’t know is, that later in my life, NOT being an artist is what nearly killed me!

My youth in Utah was filled with the pursuit of creative expression and training.   Painting, drawing, and sculpting were accompanied by piano, dance and, later, theatre.  I eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts. Unfortunately, upon graduation from college, I fell victim to those erroneous lessons about getting a “real” job and ended up working many years in corporate America in the customer service arena. The pay was good but the spirit in me was starving.  It wasn’t until my forties that a serious illness forced me to re-evaluate life and find my true potential.

The middle of my life is when I discovered that Being an artist is a REAL JOB!! I finally took the ultimate risk and listened to what my heart told me and not all those fear based messages that were running on continuous play inside my brain.   Passion about what I do and who I am now fills my life and my art. I paint to surprise others, and, myself!  Each work is an abstract expression of an event experienced or observed by me. Though only two dimensional, I approach each painting in a three-dimensional mind set.  Layered and linear, I seek to push out to you, and then, pull you back. I want each painting to be an evocative journey that you want to take.  For you, the truth is simple; either you are touched by what you see, or, you are not.  Surround yourself with that which intrigues you, and, with what draws you back to it time, after time.
